Alpha Innovating with SolarSmart

A new product from Alpha Heating Innovation makes its SolarSmart solar thermal package capable of supplying larger quantities of heated water than before. It can now be specified for large family homes where hot water demand is high, as well as light commercial applications.

Alpha’s high capacity 150 Pack comprises a floor standing 150 litre stainless steel unvented hot water cylinder, a 10-litre drain back unit, unvented kit and a wall mountable control box with wiring to link all components. The cylinder’s 100mm thick insulation ensures heat loss is kept to a minimum, while a factory fitted manifold and circulation pump simplify installation. The 150 Pack can be installed with the company’s existing roof mounted solar panels in a side-by-side, multi panel set up.

Two, three or four solar panels can be specified according to the situation, as well as the hot water and energy efficiency demands of the project. A two-panel configuration can be achieved using two landscape or two portrait panels, while portrait panels can be used to create a three or four panel configuration.

Alpha also has a new range of flashing kits that can be specified according to whether panels are to be positioned on the left, right or centre in the chosen configuration. These are for use where panels are to be set into a pitched roof. Fixing kits can also be specified to enable the panels to be installed on top of pitched roof surfaces and on flat roofs.

SolarSmart’s Solar Valve allows operation in conjunction with an lpg combination boiler. When there is an immediate hot water demand, water preheated by the sun flows from the cylinder and passes through the Solar Valve. If the water is at 60ºC plus, it flows direct to the tap – if not, the Solar Valve directs it via the lp gas boiler where it is raised to the required temperature.

Alpha offers full installation training and, if required, a list of National Federation of Roofing Contractors approved contractors who are available to provide help installing the product. SolarSmart is WRAS approved and fully covered by Alpha’s ten-year guarantee on the solar collector and cylinder, and three-year guarantee on the drain back unit.

The SolarSmart 150 litre cylinder is compatible with Alpha’s CDC, plus CDX lpg GAS combination boilers and – if installed in conjunction with an unvented cylinder – its CDS system boilers.

Alpha’s existing SolarSmart 90 Pack for domestic installations includes a glycol-free flat plate solar collector with flexible hoses for feed and return, roof fixing kit, unvented 90-litre cylinder and prefilled drain back unit. The cylinder is small and light and can be wall hung. Alpha offers product training at a selection of its nationwide training centres and also offers technical advice via its freephone helpline.
