Capita to Provide New Gas Installer SchemeFollowing the Health & Safety Executive’s (HSE) review of the domestic gas safety regime, it has announced that Capita is its preferred bidder to provide a new gas installer registration scheme in Great Britain, replacing the scheme currently run by CORGI. The new scheme will start in April 2009.
Geoffrey Podger, chief executive of HSE, said: “I would like to
thank CORGI for their contribution over the years to the installer registration
scheme; and I look forward to Capita bringing a fresh approach to gas
safety and improved value for money to the new scheme.”
The contract is expected to be valued at approximately £14 million
per annum for a term of at least five years. Around 250 CORGI employees
are expected to TUPE transfer to the new scheme.
Paul Pindar, chief executive of Capita, said: "Capita is delighted to have the opportunity to create a new, highly targeted and effective registration scheme that will significantly reduce the administration and cost burden on registered installers. We are pleased to be able to support HSE in their pursuit of continuing to improve gas safety and customer satisfaction. We will also work in close collaboration with other industry bodies to improve standards and raise consumer awareness of gas safety."
HSE says the new scheme will strengthen and improve the governance and performance management arrangements between it and the new scheme provider. Capita will have incentives to continuously improve gas safety and services to gas consumers and installers, with financial implications should they not meet the agreed performance indicators.
Over the next few months, Capita will be in discussions with HSE to firm up the contractual arrangements due to be signed this autumn.
Mike Thompson, CORGI’s chief executive, said: “CORGI is naturally disappointed with the decision but will now work closely with the HSE and Capita to ensure a smooth transition process between scheme providers in the interests of gas safety. Beyond April 2009, CORGI will continue to provide a range of commercial services under the CORGI brand to financially support the CORGI Trust. This decision affects the registration scheme only and will not impact on competence measurements, such as the ACS scheme.”
