The Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) has announced the forthcoming publication of five new technical standards – IGEM/TD/13 Edition 2 – pressure regulating installations for natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (lpg) and liquefied petroleum gas/air; IGEM/GM/6 Edition 2 – non-domestic meter installations, standard designs; IGEM/GL/6 Edition 2 – permitry for the safe flow of gas; IGEM/UP/11 Edition 2 – gas installations for educational establishments, and IGEM/SR/25 Edition 2 – hazardous area classification of natural gas installations.
Jeremy Bending, president of IGEM, said: “These new standards are all updates of previous editions and have been completely revised by panels of experts to incorporate important changes.”
IGEM will hold technical seminars to give an overview of the changes and to give delegates an opportunity to raise any questions with some of the authors. A seminar for IGEM/UP/11 Edition 2 will be held on September 21 at IGEM House in Kegworth, Derbyshire. Further standards are expected to be published and further seminars are likely to be arranged before the end of 2010.
IGEM is also set to launch a higher grade of membership for installers at the InstallerLive exhibition in September. The Licensed Gas Technician grade is designed to recognise the expertise of people carrying out work on gas installations and appliances throughout the UK. The first grade, Gas Technician, was made available earlier this year and is open to all Gas Safe registered engineers.
In addition to holding Gas Safe registration, the higher grade requires installers to demonstrate that they are operating at a higher level of competence and superior customer service.
Jeremy Bending said: “This presents an opportunity for engineers to differentiate themselves further from their competitors and completes the stepping stones that lead to Engineering Technician, the point at which their professional standing will be recognised by the Engineering Council.
“IGEM recognise the importance of the technician role within the gas industry. By creating this additional grade, we can help raise the profile of technicians by working closely with key stakeholders within the newly formed National Technician Council to achieve its overall aims.”
