South Korean car manufacturer Kia has unveiled its new sub-brand Eco-Dynamics, an initiative that will bring eco-friendly models to the international market. The company has introduced several new vehicles that run on lpg autogas, among them the Forte LPI hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), its first mass produced hybrid car.
The Forte LPI hybrid is powered by a mild-hybrid drive system consisting of a 1.6 litre petrol engine converted to lpg autogas and an electric motor. The liquefied petroleum injected (LPI) engine generates 114bhp, while the electric motor adds an additional 20bhp. The Forte achieves 17.2km per litre of lpg autogas.
The Forte will also be the world’s first hybrid vehicle to utilise a lithium polymer (li–poly) battery, which is lighter and smaller but has higher output than nickel-metal hydride batteries.
The Forte LPI hybrid will go on sale in Korea in August. Initial plans do not include sales expanding to global markets; however, next year, Kia could start exporting the LPI to those markets that provide a good lp gas infrastructure, such as China.
