Hyundai Motor Co’s first lpg–electric hybrid vehicle could come to the UK. Initial sales of the Elantra LPI HEV are to be restricted to the Korean domestic market from July 2009 but, in the future, the vehicle could be exported to markets with an existing lpg distribution infrastructure, including the UK.

To be sold in Korea under the Avante badge, the 1.6 litre Elantra LPI HEV is the world’s first hybrid vehicle to be powered by lpg, and the first to adopt lithium polymer batteries. It is likely to be sold under Hyundai’s i-Blue sub brand in the UK.

“The Elantra LPI HEV demonstrates Hyundai’s innovative approach,” said Dr Hyun–Soon Lee, president of Hyundai’s research and development division. “We have leveraged Hyundai’s world leadership in lpg–fuelled vehicles to develop a hybrid that will be very economical to operate.”

The Elantra LPI HEV promises to be as much as 50 per cent cheaper to run than a conventional Elantra model powered by petrol and emits 90 per cent fewer emissions. It emits just 103g/km of CO2, which is expected to be reduced to 100g/km in the UK to qualify for free road tax.
