OFT Publishes Off-Grid Energy Market Study

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) published the findings of its off-grid energy market study in October. The study concluded that competition in the sector works well, consumers are offered a good choice of suppliers, and that the off-grid sector does not need price regulation.

Four million households rely on off-grid energy, including lp gas, heating oil and renewables. During the study, the OFT received some complaints that people may be locked into expensive lpg contracts following an initially lower introductory rate, and is working with the lp gas industry to resolve the issue.

Lisa Thomson, policy & communications manager at UKLPG, said: “The OFT published their market study findings into off-grid energy. Of the 205-page document, the chapter on lpg is only 20 per cent of the document’s content and reflects the focus of the study. Crucially, they conclude in paragraph 5.3 that the purpose of the Competition Commission orders – to encourage switching – is working and has been successfully applied by the industry, and use of the switching supplier function of the UKLPG website is specifically referenced.”
