Drivers WILL Require ADR
Training
From January 1 2007, drivers of vehicles carrying
over 333kg of lpg will require ADR driver training. The exemption
for sub-3.5 tonne vehicles will no longer exist.
“
The UK Government and, in particular, Department for Transport
officials, have been fully supportive of our position and efforts
on driver training but, unfortunately, the lp gas industries
in other countries have been unable to get their governments
to support them. We are therefore without the required partner
for a Multinational Agreement,” said Tom Fidell, director
general of the LP Gas Association.
"Once these driver training requirements
were introduced into ADR, it was always going to be an uphill
struggle to get things
changed, especially for one country doing battle on its own,” he
said. “Our industry needs strong representation in Europe
to ensure that this sort of thing does not happen again. It is
always easier to change things before they become part of European
regulations than to try to change things afterwards.”
Thousands
of drivers will now need training during 2006. The LPGA has
said it will liaise with Department for Transport officials
concerning any flexibility in the deadline if drivers are having
difficulty in meeting it.
