Tsunami Appeal Update

After an initial approach from the World LP Gas Association, Shell Gas Lanka Ltd kindly donated to UNHCR 20 single burner lpg cookers, with hose, regulator and 2.3kg cylinder, for distribution to selected tsunami-displaced people in order to carry out field trials to see if they could be included in the UNHCR standard kit of relief items.

UNHCR found that lp gas stoves were not the answer for all the affected population, mainly due to lack of familiarity – especially compared to the use of kerosene. However, given the safety hazards of storing kerosene and the environmental effects of using firewood, lpg stoves presented an attractive option in places where people would accept them and knew how to use them. Once the stove package, including the cylinder, had been donated, the cost of refilling it was not a burden, and was less than the cost of buying kerosene for the same purpose.

UNHCR also said that, if further donations could be made available, they would be a popular item to add to the non-food relief item package for some beneficiary families, especially as they relocate to transitional accommodation. The occupants of the 2,400 housing units being built by UNHCR and its partners in Ampara, part of the nationwide transitional accommodation project, would be particularly appropriate recipients of gas stoves.
