Driver CPC Introduced

Implementation of Option 2 of the Directive 2003/59 will mean the introduction of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for driver of lorries, buses and coaches. Existing heavy goods vehicle licence holders will need to complete a minimum of 35 hours of periodic training during a five-year period to update their skills in the areas of legal compliance, energy conservation, record keeping, road traffic care and driving.

The Directive will apply to PCV drivers from September 2008 and LGV drivers from September 2009. Drivers will not be able to renew their driving licence unless they have evidence that their training is up to date.

A number of working groups are currently consulting with the Driving Standards Agency to establish details of the testing and training systems that will be required for Driver CPC.
