Calor Leads With Patio Heater Initiative

Calor Gas is leading the industry in defending a significant and growing slice of the lpg business that is under threat from environmentalists. Friends of the Earth has, for the last year, been urging the press and visitors to its website with the message not to use patio heaters because of its belief that they waste energy and contribute to climate change.

"We need to save energy, not waste it. If it’s cold outside, why not put on an extra jumper or wear a coat" urges the pressure group that campaigns on environmental issues. Calor Gas has taken steps to inform the media that concerns over the impact of such heaters have been exaggerated and there are substantial benefits, particularly for the commercial catering and leisure industry markets.

Many bars and restaurants, for example, use patio heaters to offer their customers an al fresco dining experience and to substantially improve their opportunity to do more business for a greater part of the year. Such a facility has also given many catering establishments previously limited by the size of their indoor premises a new lease of life. The heaters are also increasingly providing a solution to smoking bans.

Calor certainly has the interests of a large sector of the lp gas industry at heart with its media packs and press briefings, all of which go to great lengths to point out how modern lpg appliances, such as patio heaters, are far safer and more environmentally sensitive than the solid fuel alternatives. The radiant heating technology employed effectively warms people rather than the surrounding air, and appliance efficiencies are usually around 75%.

According to Calor, the patio heater market produces approximately 17,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, potentially resulting in carbon emissions of around 4,000 tonnes – just 0.002% of all UK carbon emissions.
