SME Autogas in Edinburgh has converted two Citroen Berlingo vans for one of its suppliers, Pentland Component Parts Ltd. Pentland purchased the vehicles, which will be used for deliveries, through Arnold Clark Automobiles Ltd in Armadale, a Citroen dealer that is keen on lpg and includes the vehicles on its price list and website.
“We used TeleflexGFI SGI systems on Pentland’s vans as they are Citroen approved and come with a three year warranty,” said Alan Wedgwood, manager at SME Autogas. “We work at an OEM level, performing approved conversions to manufacturers’ standards, and all our kits are OEM approved. We initially loaned Pentland our demonstrator Citroen Berlingo, from which they saw saving of around £3,000 per year, and the signs are that they will save money with the new vehicles.”
Alex Small, director at Pentland, said: “The decision to convert to autogas came about over many months of being persuaded by Neil and Alan of the savings we could make. The vehicles are performing very well, but we will not see the cost savings come about until after the first year, when we break even.
“We have a large fleet of vans and drivers, and we are taking our time on this project to make 100 per cent sure that the savings more than outweigh the costs. If the savings are there for sure, we will continue to convert our vehicles. The snag we are faced with at the moment is the lack of lpg throughout Edinburgh, but we live in hope that this will change.”
SME Autogas has been an Approved Installer since 2000, and is part of Stenhouse Motor Engineers Ltd, which was established in 1990 by Neil Brownlie. The company converts up to 50 vehicles per year and is an agent for Millbrook and Nicholson McLaren Engines.
Alan has managed SME Autogas since it was set up in 2000. His background is in carburation and diagnostics.
“We can offer a complete service and understanding of the customer’s engine management system,” he said. “We do some development, and work alongside equipment suppliers. Stenhouse Motors is also a main garage offering servicing and MoTs, so the customer can be fully cared for.
“We are constantly improving and updating our skills and equipment to stay ahead of the competition, and we are currently looking for more staff to help with our future plans.”
