Smurfitt Kappa Switches to Lpg with Flogas

When Smurfit Kappa was looking to reduce its carbon emissions at its corrugated packaging site in Diss, the company invited Flogas to step up to the challenge.

Corrugated packaging manufacturer Smurfit Kappa decided to review its choice of fuel last year in order to reduce its carbon footprint and, subsequently, its energy costs. The business chose to switch from oil to lpg.

Steve Faulkner, production director at Smurfit Kappa UK, said: “Smurfit Kappa is one of the leading corrugated packaging manufacturers in the UK and is tasked with providing products and complementary solutions to a wide range of businesses and industries. In order to offer a service of the highest quality, it is important that we can rely on an efficient and cost-effective fuel system to maintain the day-to-day operations of our site.

“However, with one of our key sites in Diss located in an off-mains area, we had previously relied on an oil-powered fuel system for the site, which had not only begun to prove expensive, but had also heavily increased our CO2 output. After meeting with the New Energy Division at Flogas, we soon realised that, by switching to lpg gas, we could reduce our fuel costs by around 15 to 20 per cent per year and the associated CO2 emissions by up to 29 per cent.

“The technical team at Flogas looked after every stage of the transition, from specifying and planning to assisting with the civil works and installation. The full service approach and sound knowledge of the team ensured minimum disruption to our everyday operations, so we didn’t have to concern ourselves with details of the switch and could continue to focus on our own business.

“We are delighted with the results of the project. We are seeing a return on our investment already and, in just two months, have reduced our fuel costs by £42,000 and our carbon footprint by 29 per cent.”

Dan Hamley, head of energy service at Flogas, said: “We are seeing many businesses look to take advantage of the low carbon properties of lp gas and are delighted to have been able to assist Smurfit Kappa in installing a new system to help them to meet their targets.

“Lpg has a low carbon to hydrogen ratio, which means that it will generate lower amounts of CO2 per amount of heat produced. It also has a comparably high heating value, meaning it contains more energy per kilogramme than most competing fuels, making it ideal for companies with a high energy usage. As energy efficiency continues to be a hot topic, we have no doubt that many more businesses will be looking to follow in Smurfit Kappa’s footsteps in the near future.”
