PalletFORCE with a switched to fixed tanks from cylinders to fuel its fleetCalor Gas Increasing Productivity for PalletFORCE with Bulk Lp Gas Tanks

PalletFORCE, one of the leading palletised distribution networks in the UK, has switched to fixed tanks from cylinders to fuel its fleet of lpg forklift trucks and seen significant improvement in productivity.

All the major forklift truck manufacturers offer lpg powered vehicles in their product ranges, and light users of lpg usually find cylinders to be the most cost effective solution for powering their lpg forklift fleets. Customers can simply order and exchange cylinders to meet business demand.

Businesses that manage around the clock operations find the introduction of fixed fuel tanks to forklift trucks helps reduce downtime and labour costs, which in turn increases productivity.

“Lpg trucks provide true flexibility, being suitable for both indoor and outdoor use,” said Laura Luty, bulk market manager at Calor Gas Ltd. “At Calor, we tailor fuel storage and supply decisions to find the best business solution. Whether it is bulk tanks or cylinders, with Calor the process is effortless.”

One company that has enjoyed the benefits of fixed fuel tanks is Lichfield-based PalletFORCE. The company is one of the leading palletised distribution networks in the UK and operates out of a 200,000 sq ft warehouse based at Fradley Park in Lichfield. Eight 4,000-litre bulk lpg tanks, which are refilled once a week, are situated around the site.
Operations director Carl Worgan says switching to fixed fuel tanks has supported significant productivity improvements in the company’s hub operations.

“Before we switched to fixed fuel tanks, we used refillable lp gas cylinders, which we felt met our needs and were suitable for our operation,” he said. “However, when Calor demonstrated that there was another option that would lead to increased productivity and reduced downtime, we evaluated the benefits and decided to trial the system.
“This new way of working has clearly given us benefits on our productivity and we look forward to ways of further enhancing this.”

Running out of lpg can be disastrous for forklift truck businesses, as prolonged periods of underutilised time could lead to loss of contracts.

“To prevent these potential occurrences and ensure a constant supply of fuel, Calor operates the UK’s largest lpg tanker fleet and has developed an automatic top up bulk delivery system,” said Laura.

Calor’s Think Tank telemetry system enables its bulk tank customers to receive lpg deliveries automatically. The technology operates through a telephone line or via the GSM mobile network and monitors the level of lp gas remaining in the tank, which is sent directly to Calor so top up deliveries can be arranged.

Calor manages the UK’s largest lpg storage facility, which supplies its nationwide distribution network and is supported by more than 10,000 dealers and stockists across the country.
“At Calor, we understand the importance of developing our brand and perfecting our service for customers,” said Laura. “We are now entering a challenging period, both economically and environmentally. We believe that, through our continual dedication and investment in new technologies, we will help ensure Calor maintains its market leading position.”
In this highly competitive world, businesses want the confidence that they are working with a reliable fuel supplier who can commit to delivering a consistently high level of service, says Laura.

“Calor has been taking care of the power and heating needs of UK businesses for the past 70 years,” she said. “We are very proud of our heritage and expertise and believe it’s our forward thinking approach that has helped to maintain Calor’s market leading position.”
