Team Aon Celebrates Trophy Wins with Lpg Autogas Fords in British Touring Car Championship

Team Aon secured both the Independents’ Team Trophy and the Independents’ Driver’s Trophy, courtesy of Tom Chilton, in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship this year in its Calor sponsored lpg autogas Ford Focuses. The team also finished second on the leader board behind Honda, and drivers Tom Onslow-Cole and Tom Chilton finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The Ford Focus STs are powered by a specially designed Prins liquid lpg autogas system on a Mountune built Duratec 2.0 engine. The lpg autogas component parts, adapted from the Prins LI conversion kit, were hand built for the project by Prins Autogassystemen BV. Team Aon were so fast in qualifying at Silverstone that the team were ordered to adjust the turbo inlet restrictors to 35mm, having already been restricted to 37mm and then 36mm, to reduce the advantage the lpg autogas fuelled turbo assisted engine offered over other teams racing on more conventional fuel.

Chris Taylor, autogas development manager at Calor Gas Ltd, said: “The success of the first competitive lpg autogas car specially developed to suit a motorsport environment is testament to the hard work that has gone into improving performance for lpg autogas vehicles and demonstrates how far the technology has come – not only were Team Aon competing with petrol powered teams, we were beating them.

“Motorsport is under just as much scrutiny for its contribution to carbon emissions reduction as any other industry – just look at the testing ban in Formula One – so we are proud to be leading the way in this field by reducing the environmental impact of motor racing.”
