UKLPG Code of Practice 1 Part 1 Update Published

UKLPG has announced the publication of a 2009 edition of its Code of Practice 1 Part 1 – Bulk Lpg Storage at Fixed Installations: Design, Installation and Operation of Vessels Located Above Ground.

“The new edition of this code, a must-have technical reference for those in the lpg industry, has been through a full review process in consultation with technical representatives from the industry,” said Lisa Thomson, UKLPG’s communications manager. “It is the first of several new editions of UKLPG Codes of Practice to be expected this year.”

There are a number of substantial changes to the code, and updates to references that are necessary to keep the code relevant, says UKLPG, including the redefinition of the distance between any vaporiser and the nearest building, boundary or fixed source of ignition in relation to the water capacity of the vaporiser.

The section on installation of vaporisers in buildings has been deleted, as this now requires detailed consideration of the individual installation under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR). The fixed maximum liquid level devices section has been revised to allow equipment that signals electrically to indicate when the maximum permitted level is reached during filling, and fire precautions now reflect changes to the statutory environment (the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales and the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005) and simplify the requirements with regard to water supply.

Electrical requirements now align with current practice, and guidance on lp gas vessel leak test methods stresses the asphyxiation risk when using inert gas. The typical properties of lpg have been re-edited to make them more relevant and it is anticipated that this will be copied across other UKLPG codes in due course. Area classification has also been developed in line with experience and to align with AEGPL guidance.

“UKLPG is grateful to those who made input to the changes, both in drafting and as part of the consultation, as well as to the HSE, which provided valuable input, both during the consultation and when considering comments made during the consultation,” said Lisa. “HSE continues to endorse the code.”

UKLPG republished Code of Practice 1 Part 4 Bulk Lpg Storage at Fixed Installations: Buried/Mounded Lpg Storage Vessels in 2008, and will now review Code of Practice 1 Part 2 Bulk Lpg Storage at Fixed Installations: Small Bulk Installations for Domestic Purposes during 2009.

UKLPG Codes of Practice are available for purchase from its website, www.uklpg.org.
